SHRM supports the HR Certification Institute. The HR Certification Institute promotes the establishment of professional standards and recognizes those in the human resource field who have mastered the body of knowledge that constitutes the human resource profession. Certification exams for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR), the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and the Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) will be given to qualified individuals. The HR Certification Institute suggests that all interested parties review the certification information handbook before applying for the exam. Candidates can register for the next available examination online or complete a paper application. To be eligible for the PHR, SPHR or GPHR exam, you must have at least two years of HR exempt-level experience as a practitioner, educator, researcher, or consultant. It is not necessary to be a member of SHRM in order to qualify. The PHR exam consists of HR generalist information at the operational and technical level, or ”nuts and bolts” level. The SPHR exam addresses HR generalist information at the strategic and policy level. The HR Certification Institute strongly recommends that candidates taking the PHR exam have at least two years of exempt-level HR experience, and candidates seeking SPHR certification have at least six years of exempt-level HR experience.
You will not be alone in preparing for the exam!! HRATV is dedicated to assisting eligible members who wish to take up the challenge of the PHR, SPHR or GPHR exam. HRATV supports its members seeking certification by organizing study groups.
